Fruit trees and shrubs Rootstock Roses

Rootstock PHL®

Rootstock PHL • PHL type rootstocks have been tested at the Fruit and Floriculture Institute for about fifteen years.

• They come from a Czech selection and are a natural hybrid of the bird sweet cherry and the steppe sour cherry trees.

PHL-A
Dwarf rootstock for sweet and sour cherry trees, with a growth force limited by 30-40 %, depending on variety.

• It speeds up the development of fruit. We obtain the first crop as early as during the second year after planting the trees.
It boosts the fertility of a variety and slightly speeds up the development of fruit.

• The Burlat variety on a PHL-A rootstock yielded 3.1 kg of fruit per tree during the fourth year after planting, whereas the yield on the bird sweet cherry tree was only 0.3 kg per tree.

• Thanks to the small size of the crown, the outlay on harvesting, pruning and protection of the tree against diseases and pest or rain can be limited considerably. The results of many years of research done on many varieties of sweet cherry trees in the Experimental Orchard in Dąbrowice and Przybroda are presented in the papers of Prof. S. Grzyb, Prof. A. Czynczyk, E. Rozpara PhD, M. Sitarek PhD, B. Omiecińska MSc and other authors.

• The VANDA variety of the sweet cherry tree is especially worth noticing. In one of the experiments it proved to be the most resistant to spring frost and not prone to cracking and rotting of the fruit.
